Ha Long Bay in September: the month to move

September carries nearly double the year's rate of bad reviews, 9.8% against 5.0%. It is also the month when guests stop writing about the crew and start writing about the room they were sitting in.

Across every month we hold, about one review in twenty sits at one or two stars. In September it is closer to one in ten.

That single comparison is the reason this page exists. September is also the thinnest month in our whole set, with 336 reviews against 1,044 in April, though most of that gap is our cut-off: our reviews end in August 2026, and on 2023 to 2025 alone January, February and June each have fewer.

What the month looks like

September All months
Reviews 336 8,316
Rated one or two stars 9.8% 5.0%
Average rating 4.44 4.69

Those counts use every review we hold with a date. The subject percentages further down come from the 7,094 that carry enough written text to classify, so the two sets of figures rest on different denominators and we have labelled which is which rather than blending them.

The average is the lowest of any month and the bad-review rate is the highest. Those two usually move together, so on their own they would not be worth a page. What makes September different is what people wrote about.

Guests stop writing about the crew

We classified the text of every review by subject. September inverts the pattern that holds in every other month.

Subject September Year
The crew 70.5% 81.0%
The cabin 40.0% 31.0%
Cleanliness 18.2% 13.1%
Kayaking or swimming 16.8% 11.5%
How many other people 9.5% 6.6%

Across our whole set the crew are the most discussed thing on a Ha Long boat, in four reviews out of five. September is the only month where that figure drops below three quarters, and it is the month where the cabin climbs highest.

We cannot prove the mechanism and we are not going to dress a guess as a finding. What we can say is that this is the shape you would expect when people spend more of their trip indoors and less of it doing the things a crew leads. A cabin you are pleased with is a cabin you barely mention. A cabin you sat in for an afternoon is one you describe.

The storms are in there, thinly

Storms and rough water appear in 2.1% of September reviews against 0.24% across the year.

Reading them, two seasons show up. In one year a guest describes being taken off a boat because of an approaching typhoon and praises the crew for how it was handled. Another, weeks later, describes a bay still damaged. In a second year a guest got back just before the authorities closed the water.

Those seven do not explain September’s score. Four of them are five-star. Among the month’s 33 one and two-star reviews, just two mention a storm, both from one guest posting on two sister boats’ pages on 27 September 2025.

Of the three Septembers with more than 50 reviews, the worst is 2023, with 9 bad reviews out of 56, and in our ten years of weather data not one of its days ranks among the 50 windiest. Five of those nine were posted on 8 September 2023 by three guests on Orchid’s two pages, and the two who wrote text describe the same trip. September 2024, the month Typhoon Yagi hit, came in at 4 out of 60. Nor is the rate a quirk of our cut-off: on 2023 to 2025 alone September still runs at 10.0%, against 6.3% for October and 2.9% for July. We do not know what drives it.

What this does not prove

The dates are posting dates. People write reviews days or weeks after getting home, so trips from late August land in the September column and trips from late September land in October. This blunts the finding in both directions and it is the single largest weakness on this page.

The sample is small. Three hundred and thirty-six reviews is the least we hold for any month, and only 285 of those carry enough text to classify. The bad-review rate of 9.8% would still sit above the annual average if it were several points lower, so the direction survives, but do not treat the exact figures as precise.

Low volume is mostly our cut-off. September to December lack the 2026 reviews that January to August have. Whether storms also cut the number of trips, reviews cannot say, because a cruise that never sailed rarely gets reviewed.

What to do about it

If your dates are movable, move them. July and January both score better on our numbers, and the month by month comparison sets all twelve side by side.

If your dates are fixed, a storm is the risk you can plan around, because it can stop the trip altogether. The closure comes from Quang Ninh’s Department of Agriculture and Environment, which asks the port authorities and coastal districts to stop licensing boats from a set hour. For Typhoon Ragasa that was 10:00 on 24 September 2025, as Lao Động reported the same morning, and boats already out could be allowed until 14:00 to reach shelter. Licences come back only after the final bulletin on the storm, and no reopening time is set in advance. The catch is that your operator does not decide the closure, so what protects you is its written policy on cancellation and rescheduling.

Ask three things before you pay: what happens if the bay closes, whether that means a refund or a reschedule, and who decides. Get the answers in writing. We hold seven distinct cancellation ladders across the boats we track and each of them rests on a single source, so there is no industry norm here for you to fall back on.

If the boat has a pool or an indoor lounge worth sitting in, that matters more in September than in any other month, which is the practical reading of the cabin figure above.

Common questions

Is September the worst month to visit? On our numbers, yes, by a clear margin on scores. December is second worst at 6.8% and October third at 6.2%, and both sit far closer to the annual average than September does.

Will my trip definitely be cancelled? No. Nine September reviews in ten still sit at three stars or above. How often the bay closes, reviews cannot tell you, since a trip that never sailed rarely gets reviewed, so get the operator’s closure policy in writing.

Is travel insurance worth it for September? Twenty-five of the 139 listings we hold mention insurance as included, which means most do not. We are not licensed to advise on insurance and will not, but the question is more live in this month than in any other.

What about early September? The posting-date problem means our September bucket contains late August trips and our October bucket contains late September ones. We cannot resolve the month any finer than this, and anyone who tells you they can with review data is overreaching.
