Choosing a boat

Wooden hull or steel, and what it really tells you

Fourteen of the 87 boats we publish have wooden hulls, and our sources disagree about two more. The wooden boats are older, smaller and a little cheaper than the steel ones, and the number that would actually matter is published by nobody.

Sixty-six of the 87 boats we publish are steel. Fourteen are wood, and on two more, Paloma and Victory, our sources disagree about what the hull is made of. One more, Verdure Lotus Grandeur, is described only as metal, and for Unicharm, Venezia, Aqua Legend and Aqua Classic nobody publishes the material. Most people never find out which they booked until they are standing on it, and the guides that mention hulls at all treat wood as a romantic downgrade: prettier, older, a bit cheaper.

On age and price our numbers mostly bear that out. Among the boats we publish with a two-day rate, the twelve wooden ones start from $110 to $310 per person, two sharing, and the 62 steel ones from $105 to $402 (rate sheets read 6 August to 10 October 2026). Ginger is the wooden boat at the top of that range. Violet, also wooden, now sells only a two-night trip, from $615 a person for the whole trip, so it has no two-day rate to set against the rest.

What the wooden fleet looks like

Wood Steel
Boats 14 66
Launch years published 2009 to 2018 2003 to 2026
Median cabins 15.5 24.5
Median from-price per person, two sharing, 2 days 1 night $129 (12 published boats priced) $157.50 (62 published boats priced)
From-price range per person, two sharing $110 to $310 $105 to $402

Thirteen of the fourteen wooden boats publish a launch year, and every one of those years falls between 2009 and 2018. Steel is where the new building has gone: twenty-eight of the fifty-two steel boats that give a year launched in 2020 or later.

Wooden boats are smaller, and that is the real difference

The median wooden boat has fifteen or sixteen cabins. The median steel boat has twenty-four or twenty-five. The largest wooden boat in our set has twenty cabins; the largest steel one has fifty-six.

This is the difference that actually reaches you. It is not the material under the waterline, it is that a wooden hull in this bay comes attached to a smaller boat, fewer guests and a shorter list of facilities. If that sounds appealing, read our guide to boat size, because that is the choice you are really making.

Where the wooden boats sail is skewed too. They are 29% of the Bai Tu Long fleet, 18% of Ha Long, and 11% of Lan Ha. If you book Lan Ha you will most likely be on steel.

What the reviews say, and why we do not trust them yet

Guests on wooden boats leave better reviews on every measure we track. One and two star ratings run at 2.6% against 5.4% for steel. The crew get mentioned in 90% of reviews against 80%. Other people on board come up in 2.4% of reviews against 6.9%, though as an actual complaint it is rare on either.

We are not going to tell you that wood causes any of that, for two reasons.

The first is sample size. Only five wooden-hulled boats were in the review set we classified in August 2026, against forty-four steel ones, and 460 reviews against 6,634. Five boats is a handful of businesses, not a category.

The second is more interesting. Wooden boats are smaller, and small boats already show better numbers in our data regardless of what they are made of. The two variables move together in this fleet, and with 87 boats we cannot separate them. The honest reading is that wooden boats look better because small boats look better, and wood happens to come in small.

The number nobody publishes

Not one operator among the 87 boats we publish says when the boat was last refitted. Not one.

For a steel hull that is a gap. For a wooden hull working salt water year-round it is the single most important fact about the vessel, and it is unknown across the entire fleet. A well-maintained wooden boat from 2009 is a better proposition than a neglected one from 2019, and we cannot tell you which of the fourteen is which, because the information does not exist in public.

Launch year is the closest proxy on offer, and it is a poor one. We publish it because it is what exists, not because it answers the question.

The catch

Wood asks more of the operator and gives more back when the operator delivers. Timber moves, needs recaulking, and shows its condition in a way that painted steel hides. That cuts both ways: on a boat that is looked after you can see it, and on one that is not you can see that too.

The trade-offs are practical rather than romantic. Wooden boats carry thinner public records, because a thirteen cabin boat generates a fraction of the reviews a forty cabin boat does, which means less to read before you commit.

If you want the look, book the boat rather than the material, and ask when it was last out of the water. It is the one question in this article we cannot answer for you.

Common questions

Is a wooden boat less safe? We have no safety data of any kind and will not guess. Vietnamese overnight boats are licensed and inspected by the authorities regardless of hull material, and inspection records are not public.

Is a wooden boat noisier? Slightly less likely to be mentioned in our reviews, at 1.1% against 2.0% for steel, but both numbers are small and the wooden sample is thin. Engine noise and generator noise depend far more on which cabin you are in than on the hull.

Which should I book? Pick on size, bay and itinerary. If two boats come out level on those and one is wooden, take the wooden one for the look, knowing you are buying appearance rather than a measurable difference.
