Athena Royal Cruise

Nobody publishes where Athena Royal boards, and nobody publishes where she goes. Those two gaps are unusual enough to lead with, because between them they cover the two questions you would ask on the phone.

Take the pier first. We hold no departure point for this ship from any source, and in Ha Long that is not a small blank. A driver has at least three plausible answers: Tuan Chau Marina, the Ha Long International Cruise Port about twenty minutes away in traffic, and Hon Gai Pier over on the far side of the Bai Chay bridge. Get the pier in writing when you book, then say the name out loud to whoever is driving you. This is the single most common way a cruise morning goes wrong here.

The itinerary is the second blank. We hold no list of stops for this boat at all, which for a Bai Tu Long sailing matters, because the whole argument for that bay is which corners of it you reach. The bay assignment itself comes from the operator alone.

What the hardware is

Twenty-two cabins, and this one is verified. The operator’s own breakdown accounts for twenty-one of them: twelve deluxe balcony rooms at 25 square metres, seven elegance balcony at 28, and two on the second deck at 30 that they call the premium terrace royal. Every figure in that list rests on one source. The twenty-second cabin is not described anywhere we could find.

A fourth size, 45 square metres, appears twice in the material we hold and matches none of those grades. That is worth knowing before you read a listing, because a square-metre number without a grade attached to it tells you nothing here.

Capacity is given as 42 guests, launch year 2019, hull steel. All three are the operator’s word and nobody else’s. Deck count and length go unpublished. A jacuzzi, a spa, kayaking and the balconies are verified independently. The pool and the gym rest on the operator alone, which is worth a question if either is why you are booking.

What the cabins cost

The rate table was read on 6 August 2026 and carries a caveat that changes how you should use it. The basis recorded against it is the highest published rate we could locate in a listing, so these are ceilings rather than a tariff. Per cabin for two on the one-night trip: deluxe balcony $560, elegance balcony $620, premium suite $760, royal suite $1,060.

Two of those grade names do not appear in the deck breakdown above, and the premium terrace royal from the breakdown does not appear in the rate table. So the two documents describe the same twenty-two rooms under different names. Ask for the deck, the size and the room number, because the label will not carry that information for you.

The per-person figure listings advertise is $140, scraped on 7 August 2026 and uncorroborated. Two of those is $280 against a cheapest published cabin of $560, exactly half. We would plan against $280 as a floor and $560 as a ceiling and expect to land between them.

Guests give the more reliable small numbers. Happy hour beer is $2, according to a five-star reviewer who was arguing with other reviewers about value. Spa treatments and cocktails are charged separately, which several guests mention without complaint. One guest sets out the pricing structure more plainly than the operator does: book as an even number, because a solo traveller pays a supplement and a party of three gets no discount at all.

The bottom of the file

We collected 91 reviews and read them, 56 in English. Sixty-seven are five-star. Five are one-star and three are two-star, so eight guests, nine per cent, sat at the bottom. The aggregate score we hold is 9.5, resting on a review count we cannot reconcile with what we collected, so treat it as an indication rather than a measurement.

The low and middling reviews agree on the ship. A three-star guest calls it an older boat starting to show its wear and not as well maintained as it should be, then gives the service ten out of five in the same paragraph. A one-star guest says the rooms are old and need a refresh. The same three-star reviewer notes that the shared life jackets are decent and do not smell as bad as the ones on other boats, which is the kind of detail that tells you the review is real.

One party reports several guests falling ill after eating on board, with one of them taken to hospital. We hold no way to check it and we are not going to bury it. Another one-star review describes an incident between guests that the writer says untrained staff failed to handle, and that account is theirs to give rather than ours to paraphrase.

There are further one-star reviews making claims about the operator’s conduct that we cannot test. We will not repeat those, and we will not pretend the reviews do not exist. Read the one-star reviews yourself before you commit. That is twenty minutes, and it will tell you more than any figure we could put on this page.

Now the good record, which is larger and unusually specific. Guests name the onboard managers, Ha and Chinh and Andy among them, and several say outright that the crew is the only thing separating one Ha Long boat from another at this price. A guest in a corner cabin on the second deck describes a wide balcony and a window next to the bath. One reviewer who sailed after the typhoon writes that the bay was still battered and the recovery work was visible from the deck, which is a more honest picture of the water than most photographs give you.

Who it suits

Couples who want a quiet ship with few cabins on it, who will accept furniture that has been used, and who are booking for the crew rather than the fittings. On that basis it earns its place on the Bai Tu Long list and among the best-value boats. If the bay is not settled yet, our comparison of the three comes before any boat.

Who should look elsewhere

Anyone who needs the programme confirmed before paying. We cannot tell you what this boat does on its second morning, the operator does not publish it, and a three-star guest who assumed a proper cruise through the bay came away disappointed. That is a gap to close on the phone, not on arrival.
