Cat Ba and Ha Long City, around your cruise

The two towns people pair with a Ha Long cruise are Cat Ba and Ha Long City, and the fleet has nearly always chosen for you. Of the boats that say where they board, all but one leave from the Ha Long City side. Only one names a Cat Ba pier. That decides where your spare hours go.

Every guide to a Ha Long trip eventually tells you to spend a night in Cat Ba or a night in Ha Long City, and the advice usually treats them as an even choice. In the fleet we publish they are not even. Of the 87 boats, sixty-seven say where they board (our count on 12 October 2026), and sixty-six of them board on the Ha Long City side, at Tuan Chau Marina or one of two smaller ports. Only one names a Cat Ba pier: Venezia, a ten-cabin Lan Ha boat whose operator has guests board by tender at Beo Harbour in Cat Ba town. Before you decide which town to sleep in, the boats have decided which town you will be standing in at nine in the morning.

Read the table as two facts. The first is that the sixty-seven boats naming a harbour all but agree: sixty-six of them board at Ha Long City. This holds even for Lan Ha Bay trips, which travellers often associate with Cat Ba, because the boat still tends to set out from Tuan Chau and sail across to Lan Ha rather than starting on the Cat Ba shore. The town in the brochure photos is not always the town you launch from.

The second fact is the twenty that name nothing, and we treat them honestly below. But for planning the day around your cruise, the signal is clear enough: unless your specific booking says otherwise, your transfer will aim for Ha Long City, and that is where a spare morning or afternoon will most likely land.

What that means for your spare hours

The practical consequence is about time, not scenery. If you arrive the night before, the sensible base is near your harbour, which means Ha Long City for almost every named boat in our set. Trying to stage the night before from Cat Ba, when your boat boards at Tuan Chau, adds a ferry and a drive to the start of a trip that already begins with a long transfer. The geography quietly punishes the mismatch.

Cat Ba earns its own night at the other end, or as a separate leg, if the island itself is what you want, its beaches and the national park. What it does not do, for every boat we publish but Venezia, is serve as the convenient launch pad the pairing implies. If your plan is simply a comfortable start and finish around the cruise, the harbour has already pointed you at Ha Long City.

The long drive both towns share

Neither town shortens the journey from Hanoi. The three harbours on the mainland side all sit around Ha Long City, about two and a half hours from Hanoi by car on the expressway and three and a half to four and a half on a shared shuttle that collects from hotels first, and Cat Ba is further still once the ferry is counted. This matters more than it should because the transfer is almost never in your fare: just three of 139 listings include the Hanoi transfer in writing. So most travellers are arranging their own car to Ha Long City, and the town you pick to sleep in is a town you will reach after that same long drive, not instead of it. Our guide to getting there from Hanoi covers the transfer in full, and the harbour guide covers which pier goes with which bay.

The catch, and what we cannot see

This guide can tell you where the fleet boards. It cannot tell you what to do in either town, because that is not something our data measures, and a list of restaurants and viewpoints is exactly the internet-compiled writing this site tries not to add to. What we hold is the boats, so what we can say with confidence is the boarding pattern, and no more.

The twenty boats that name no harbour are the real limit here. Their boarding point is unknown, we cannot tell you where they start, and some of them may well board at Cat Ba as Venezia does, so the silence does not mean they do not. So read the headline precisely: of the boats that state a harbour, all but one are on the Ha Long City side, and Cat Ba is nearly absent from the named list rather than absent from the whole market. If a Cat Ba start matters to you, ask the operator directly, because the listing may simply not have said.

Common questions

Should I stay in Cat Ba or Ha Long City before my cruise? For a convenient start, Ha Long City, because 66 of the 67 boats in our set that name a harbour board on that side. Choose Cat Ba for the island itself, but not as a shortcut to your boat, because it usually is not one.

Do Lan Ha Bay cruises leave from Cat Ba? Rarely, in our data. Lan Ha trips in the fleet we publish still tend to board at Tuan Chau, near Ha Long City, and sail across; Venezia, which boards at Beo Harbour in Cat Ba town, is the one exception we hold. The bay you visit and the town you leave from are separate choices.

Why is Cat Ba so rare in your table? Because only one of the sixty-seven boats that name a harbour, Venezia, names a Cat Ba pier. That is not proof no other boat does; twenty boats name no harbour at all, and some could. It means the pattern among boats that say is close to unanimous.

Does either town save me the drive from Hanoi? No. Ha Long City is about two and a half hours from Hanoi by car and longer on a hotel-pickup shuttle, Cat Ba further with its ferry, and the transfer is in your fare on only three of 139 listings. Plan the long drive either way.
