Getting there

Hanoi to Ha Long: every route, and the costs

About 160 km of expressway, two and a half hours by road, and three ways to make the trip. Three listings out of 139 include the journey in the fare. The seaplane operator announced an end to its Ha Long flights from 1 April 2026, and by October its website advertised private jets instead. The train was suspended in 2020, and we have found no newspaper report of it running again.

Of the 139 listings we read in August 2026 for the seventy boats we tracked then, three state in writing that the journey from Hanoi is included in the fare.

Three. It is the largest cost sitting outside the headline price, and 136 listings leave it for you to solve. This page is what we can establish about solving it, and it separates what is well corroborated from what is not.

The road itself

The drive runs roughly 160 km. We say roughly because the twenty-four sites that state a distance do not agree with each other: the figures we hold run from 155 km to 170 km, which is a spread of about ten percent for a fixed journey between two fixed places. Nobody is lying. They are measuring from different points in Hanoi.

Journey time is far more consistent. Eighteen sources put it at two and a half hours by car, and that figure has held since the expressway network was completed. You travel it in two hops, first on the road out to Hai Phong and then on the coastal stretch up to Ha Long. Before those roads existed the same trip took around four hours, which is why older advice you may still find recommends leaving Hanoi at dawn.

The three ways to travel it

Typical advertised price Priced by Journey Corroboration
Shuttle or limousine bus $20 to $26, or 180,000 to 300,000 VND the seat 2.5 h 15 domains
Private car 1,600,000 to 2,800,000 VND the vehicle 2.5 h 13 domains
Public bus 120,000 to 250,000 VND the seat 3.5 h or more 7 domains

A limousine bus is the option most cruise guests take. It is a minivan of seven to nine reclining seats, it collects from hotels in the Old Quarter, and it is what an operator usually means when they offer to arrange your transfer. The two and a half hours it advertises is the drive. With the hotel round, a van that collects you around eight reaches the pier between half eleven and half twelve, as our two day, one night page sets out.

A private car costs several times more and buys three things: your own departure time, a door-to-door drop at your own hotel rather than a central meeting point, and somebody whose only job that morning is you.

The public bus is the cheap option and it goes to a bus station rather than to a marina, so budget for a taxi at the far end and for a slower run with stops.

The price trap nobody flags

Read that table’s third column again, because it is the part that catches people.

Shuttle seats are priced per person. Private cars are priced per vehicle. A shuttle at $22 and a car at 1,800,000 VND look like a fivefold difference until you notice the second one carries four people, at which point the gap is closer to sixty percent.

This is not a hypothetical confusion. Among the sites we crawl, one lists a private car at $105 per passenger while another lists the same category of service at 1,600,000 VND for the car, and both present the figure in the same column of the same kind of table. If you are comparing quotes, the first question is not how much. It is how much for whom.

For two people the shuttle almost always wins on cost. For four, a private car is usually level or cheaper and better in every other respect.

Can you still take the seaplane or the train?

Not that we can find. Hai Au Aviation announced in March 2026 that it would end its seaplane flights over Ha Long Bay from 1 April, and by October its own website advertised private jet charters instead. The rail line from Hanoi was suspended in 2020, with no report we can find of it reopening.

The seaplane. Lao Dong reported the announcement on 5 March 2026 and Thanh Nien the next day. The airline told both papers it was changing the direction of its business. Both papers list the Hanoi to Tuan Chau flight among the airline’s services and date its first commercial flight from Noi Bai to September 2014, though neither gives that route a line of its own in the announcement. Thanh Nien added that with helicopter sightseeing already stopped in 2023, the end of the seaplane would leave no sightseeing from the air in the province.

Those reports were written before the end date. What shows the flights did stop is the airline’s homepage. Read on 7 October 2026, it advertises a Falcon 2000S private jet whose listed base is Tan Son Nhat, in Ho Chi Minh City, and does not mention a seaplane anywhere on that page. A search of Vietnamese news that same day found nothing about the flights restarting, and we know of no other seaplane service from Hanoi to the bay.

Until this update, this page said our sources disagreed and declined to choose. Eleven of the sites we crawl describe a forty-five minute flight from Noi Bai to Tuan Chau, several naming the operator and quoting fares. We crawled those pages between 6 and 10 August 2026, four months after the announced end date, and they still described the flight.

The train. The newest newspaper report we could find on the Yen Vien to Ha Long line is more than four years old: Lao Dong, 8 June 2022. The Ha Long station master told the paper services had stopped in 2020 as a COVID-19 measure, and the paper reported no plan to restart them. No newspaper report we have found since says the line reopened, and we have found no official notice either way. The same article put a one-way trip at about seven hours over more than 130 km of track; of the sites we crawl, five still describe a rail service and two say it is suspended. Seven hours against two and a half by road is the real answer whether or not a train is running.

If a travel page still quotes a seaplane fare or a train time, check when it was written before you plan a day around it. That includes this page.

Which harbour are you actually going to

Before you can price any of this you need to know where the journey ends. Twenty of the 87 boats we publish never say, by our count on 12 October 2026.

Departure point Boats
Tuan Chau Marina 51
Hon Gai Pier 4
Ha Long International Cruise Port 11
Beo Harbour, Cat Ba town 1
Not stated anywhere we could find 20

Treat even the known column with care. Of the sixty-seven boats where we have a harbour at all, forty-five rest on a single source we could not corroborate elsewhere. This is the weakest data on our site and we would rather say so than dress it up.

Here is the part worth the read. Of the thirty-three Lan Ha boats where we could establish a departure point, thirty-two board at Tuan Chau Marina, on the Ha Long side of the water. The exception is Venezia, whose operator has guests board by tender at Beo Harbour in Cat Ba town.

People book Lan Ha because it sits off Cat Ba island, nearer Hai Phong, and reasonably assume the drive changes. In our data it does not. Choosing the southern bay moves where your boat sails, not where your bus goes. Bai Tu Long is the bay that shifts: four of the nine boats we could place use Hon Gai Pier, a different part of Ha Long City and a different drop-off for your driver.

Arriving from Noi Bai airport rather than central Hanoi is a longer run again, at roughly 180 km by the thirteen sources that state it, and most operators will quote it as a separate product.

Why this matters more than it looks

We classified the written text of 7,104 guest reviews. The road journey comes up in 5.5% of them, which sounds minor until you split by rating.

Share mentioning the transfer
One and two star reviews 18.0%
Five star reviews 4.0%

Of every review that raises the transfer at all, one in five sits inside a negative write-up. That is the third worst ratio of any subject we track, behind only the itinerary going wrong and problems with booking.

Guests on boats from $120 to $149 a person mention it most. On 9 October 2026 we grouped the classified reviews by each boat’s rate, half its cheapest cabin for two on a two-day trip. On the sixteen boats from $120 to $149 a person, the transfer comes up in 8.1% of 2,343 reviews, against 3.8% from $150 to $199 and 4.6% at $200 and up. The one boat below $120 has eight classified reviews, too few to read. The middle band sits below the top one, so there is no steady slope behind the $120 to $149 figure.

What actually goes wrong

Three patterns repeat across the reviews we read.

Waiting. A guest on Heritage Binh Chuan wrote that their “transfer was delayed both ways” and that the waiting lounge had no working air conditioning, adding that “you could be stuck there for two hours”. A guest on Sea Stars described “waiting for 40minutes in cold before we were picked up”.

The arithmetic of one night. A guest on Capella put it plainly: “We spent more time traveling from / to Hanoi than in the boat.” Five to seven hours of road, depending on whether you drive or take a shuttle that collects from hotels, against roughly twenty hours aboard is the shape of a two day, one night package, and it is arithmetic you can do before booking rather than after.

The shopping stop. Several guests describe a long halt at a roadside emporium in each direction. Whether one is scheduled appears in no listing we hold.

All three are accounts of what happened to those guests on those days. None is a verdict on an operator, and we are not offering one.

The catch

Arranging your own transport saves money and hands you the timing risk. If the boat sails at noon and your driver meets traffic, the boat sails. Operators rarely wait, and no cancellation policy in our set covers a guest who missed the pier.

The trade-offs are worth pricing before you save on the road. Doing it yourself keeps cash and costs you the one guarantee that matters, which is that somebody else is answerable for getting you there on time. If you go that way, build in two spare hours and treat them as part of the fare.

Two limitations on everything above. The fares are what sites advertise, gathered in one pass rather than checked weekly, and transport pricing in Vietnam moves. And we have not driven these routes with a stopwatch. What we can tell you is which figures many independent sources agree on and which rest on one.

Common questions

Which harbour will I leave from? Most likely Tuan Chau Marina, which serves 51 of the 67 boats we could place, including every Lan Ha boat we confirmed except Venezia, which boards in Cat Ba town. Ask for the pier by name at booking, because 20 boats in our set never state it.

Should I book the transfer through the cruise? If they offer it at a transparent price, yes. It moves responsibility for arriving on time onto them. Only three of 139 listings include it as standard, so for most boats this is a paid extra you must ask about.

Shuttle or private car? Two people, shuttle. Four people, private car, which by then costs about the same and drops you at your own door. Check whether the quote is per seat or per vehicle before comparing anything.

Can I still fly in by seaplane? No, as far as we can find. Lao Dong and Thanh Nien reported in March 2026 that Hai Au Aviation would end its seaplane flights over Ha Long Bay from 1 April, and by October the airline’s website advertised private jets and no seaplane. We have found no report of the flights restarting, and we know of no other seaplane service from Hanoi to the bay. Eleven travel sites we crawled in August 2026 still described the forty-five minute flight from Noi Bai, so check the date on any page that offers it.

Is one night enough? It is the most common package and the one where the road can rival the time aboard. Our guide to what happens on board covers what an extra day buys.

Does my choice of bay change the drive? Rarely for Lan Ha, which departed Tuan Chau in every case we could confirm but one, Venezia, which boards in Cat Ba town. Bai Tu Long often uses Hon Gai Pier instead.
