Nostalgia Cruise

We cannot tell you who runs Nostalgia. That sounds like a footnote and it is not. The launch year, the hull material, the deck count and the departure pier on this page all come from a single source that we were unable to tie to a confirmed operator site for this particular boat. All ten photographs we hold come from the Google business listing rather than from any operator domain, because our collector is deliberately blocked on this hull for the same reason. What follows is as good as we can make it, and it is weaker than the pages where we know whose ship we are describing.

The size is confirmed, and the size is the reason to look. Ten cabins, agreed across sources. On this bay, at this money, that combination is rare.

The arithmetic is what makes it interesting. Ten cabins means everyone goes ashore in one tender and everyone eats at the same sitting, and by the second morning the crew knows how you take your coffee. There is a pool, verified rather than claimed, plus a jacuzzi, a spa, kayaking and a balcony on every cabin. The gym is on the operator’s word alone. Two decks, also a single source, and our reading is that a pool on a two-deck ten-cabin vessel is somewhere to cool off rather than somewhere to swim. Nobody publishes the passenger capacity or the length of the hull.

The cabin table does not add up

Three grades are published with room counts attached: six of the base suite, four queens and a single king. That is eleven rooms on a boat with ten cabins. The names do not line up either, because the source carrying those counts calls the base grade the Prince and Princess Suite while the rate sheet calls it the Princess Suite. One side of that is out of date and we cannot tell you which.

Sizes are similarly loose. Three sources say 28 m², two say 30, two say 56 and one says 35. Twenty-eight is the most reported, which is not the same as being right, and the 56 probably belongs to a grade nobody has bothered to name. The king suite is the only one anybody puts at 30 m², and there is exactly one of it, so if that is the room you want, book months out rather than weeks.

What it costs

The rate table, read on 6 August 2026, prices the base suite at $310 for two on the one-night trip, the queen at $350 and the king at $480. Two people sharing the base suite pay $155 each.

That table is flagged as the highest published rate we could find, so treat it as a listing ceiling rather than an operator tariff. One guest gives a real number: roughly A$650 for two people in a base-grade room on the two-day trip. At any recent exchange rate that is comfortably above $310, and the difference is where road transfers and on-board extras live. Get the transfer arrangement written down with the cabin grade.

Where it costs you

We collected 354 reviews on this boat and read them, 239 of those in English. Three hundred and thirty sit at five stars. Five are one-star and six are two-star: eleven out of 354, or three per cent. That is low. Across the boats on this site the bottom-of-the-scale share runs from about one per cent to nineteen, and three sits at the good end of that spread.

Two of those eleven make allegations about physical conduct by staff that we have no means of testing. We are not going to repeat them and we are not going to pretend they are not sitting there. Read the one-star reviews on Google before you book this boat. Ten minutes is enough to decide whether you believe them.

The checkable complaints are worth planning around. A two-star reviewer calls it an old boat, which sits badly against a 2022 launch date that only the operator states, and we cannot settle the disagreement. The same review and one other say the two-night trip is really one full day with two half days on either side of it, built around the schedule of the one-night guests. Another guest describes the three-hour drive from Hanoi, boarding a small tender at about one in the afternoon, and fifty minutes on that tender in the smell of diesel before reaching the ship. Plumbing failed in a cabin on one trip.

The good record is specific in a way that is hard to fake. Crew members get named individually, over and over, by different reviewers. A couple with a shellfish allergy had every meal adjusted without argument. One guest was moved up to a queen suite on arrival and another booked late through an agent when their first choice sold out, then wrote the trip up as the best part of their holiday. Several say the ten-cabin count is exactly what they were paying for: quiet, and nobody queueing.

The route

The published run works the Cat Ba side properly. Kayaking in the Tra Bau area, the lagoon at Ao Ech, the village at Viet Hai inland on Cat Ba Island, and Trung Trang cave, with Ha Long water on the way out and back. That is a longer list than most boats at this price publish, and it is the argument for taking the extra night despite what the reviewers above say about how the second day is shaped. Kayaking is included and verified, which matters because it is the inclusion most often dropped between the listing and the day itself.

Boarding is at Tuan Chau Marina on one source, and the published stop list opens with Tuan Chau wharf, which is the same place under a different name. Confirm it anyway, then say it to your driver twice. Tuan Chau and the Ha Long International Cruise Port are about twenty minutes apart, Hon Gai Pier is over the Bai Chay bridge on the far side of the water, and drivers swap them often enough to be worth the sentence.

Who it suits

Couples and pairs of friends who want a genuinely small boat on Lan Ha Bay without the premium that usually comes attached, and groups of six or eight who could fill most of the vessel between them. On that basis it is the cheapest thing on our small-boat list and it earns its place on the best-value list too.

Who should look elsewhere

Families who need connecting cabins, and anyone who wants somewhere on board to disappear to. Ten cabins across two decks means your room is the only place you can be alone. If the water itself is still an open question, the three bays compared is the page to start on.
