Ha Long Bay

The famous one. Nineteen hundred limestone islands, the most dramatic karst of the three bays, and by some distance the most traffic.

Ha Long is the bay on the postcard, and it earns the reputation. The karst towers here are taller and more closely packed than in the two neighbouring bays, and the classic view of pillars fading into haze towards the horizon is a Ha Long view specifically.

It is also the busiest water in northern Vietnam. Most boats sail from the Ha Long International Cruise Port, and at peak times the tender queue at Sung Sot cave is the least romantic twenty minutes of the trip. Boats holding earlier cave slots make a real difference here, and it is worth asking which slot yours has.

If you have one night and want the view you came for, this is the bay. If you would rather swim and hear nothing at anchor, look at Lan Ha.
